New Year, Same Me

It is always an interesting phenomenon to hear people discuss their new year resolutions. You begin to see all the people, most of which you’ve never seen before, walking around the neighborhood to chase their “new year, new me” goals.

Not to say that there is anything wrong with resolutions, no matter when you make them. I am seeking something more sustainable. I’ve been focusing on what I can really focus on and nurture rather than attempting to get rid of things. I like the challenge of nurturing positive traits or behaviors.

Well, nothing like ripping the bandaid off right? I signed up for GUE Fundamentals! I’m FREAKED OUT. Excited, yes but FREAKING OUT. You hear horror stories about “Fundies”. “Fundies can make full grown men cry”, “Fundies is the hardest class you’ll ever take”. Well thankfully, I’m not a full grown man — no guarantees I won’t cry. I also have my favorite school of fish — the S-Fish, the M-Fish and the K-Fish.

I’ve come a long way since I first heard the word “Fundies”. First, probably most importantly, I now know that it isn’t short for fun underwear. But I have also had the opportunity to work on myself. I went from being the girl that REFUSED to beach dive to almost exclusively beach diving. Next, I went from this…

This the diver that complained about not being able to get trimmed out and being frustrated with it. To the diver that now feels like she’s in a Tom Cruise movie.

To most recently…

The diver that is pretty trimmed out most of the time and swims slower than a turtle in peanut butter. But it’s coming along. I also have to get my fins flattened out, that requires getting my calves loosened up. That’ll be a to do all on it’s own.

What does 2021 look like for me?

I’m glad you asked, dear reader. It looks like digging deep into what has always made me, me. A deep love and desire to be the best I can be, always. For my personal diving, this means doing yoga to keep myself limber and to help increase mobility. Continuing to invest the time into exercise regardless of how difficult it may be to find that time (and the bitter pain of missing the pre-covid gym!). This also looks like shaking off the funk of a rough 2020. I’m not going to go into all the 500 shades of funk that 2020 was but I will say, I refuse to carry it into 2021. Just keep swimming!

And because I adore motivational quotes, I’ll end with one…

“The doors will be opened to those who are bold enough to knock”

  • Tony Gaskins, Motivational Speaker

Start knocking my friends. Stay bold. Stay healthy.
